The Moldavian Troika Tour explores three capitals : Chisinau , Moldova’s modern hub; Benderi , Transdnistria’s historic Second Capital with its Ottoman Fortress; and Tiraspol , the Third Capital, home to Soviet landmarks like the Lenin statue and “Back to USSR” cafe. In Benderi, uncover the fortress’s legacy, then delve into Tiraspol’s Soviet-era sites, including Gagarin Square and the Parliament. Next, visit Dubossary’s old music school , where a preserved statue of Lenin stands, paired with a glimpse of the town’s hydroelectric station. Continue to Old Orhei’s ancient cave monastery for history and a traditional Moldovan lunch, followed by Curchi Monastery’s architectural beauty. Optional extensions add Soviet-era ferry crossings for a nostalgic journey.
TOUR ITINERARY
Your journey begins with a pickup from airport or your hotel in Firsts capital – Chisinau, followed by a drive to Second capital Benderi, one of Transdnistria’s historic cities. Upon arrival, explore the legendary Ottoman Fortress, an important stronghold with a rich past. A city tour of Benderi will provide insights into its fascinating blend of history and Soviet-era influences.
Next, head to Third capital – Tiraspol city. A guided city tour will take you through its main landmarks, including the central square, the imposing Lenin statue in front of the parliament, and the solemn war memorial commemorating thre wars. You will also see the National Banks, the House of Soviets, the university district, Gagarin Square, and the Drama Theater. Enjoy lunch at the iconic Soviet-themed restaurant, “Back to USSR,” where traditional flavors meet nostalgic decor.
After lunch or coffee break, continue to Dubossary, a small but historically significant town. Highlights of the city tour include the Lenin statue in front of the music school, the hydroelectric power station, a classic Soviet-style bar, and an old abandoned Jewish cemetery, offering a glimpse into the town’s diverse past.
The journey proceeds to the Old Orhei Complex we exit territory of Transdnistria), a stunning archaeological and natural reserve. Explore the ancient Cave Monastery and its surrounding landscapes, soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. Enjoy a traditional Moldovan lunch at a local guesthouse, featuring homemade dishes such as placinte (savory pastries), mamaliga (cornmeal porridge) with brinza (sheep cheese), roasted meats, fresh vegetables, and local wine. Optionally, enjoy tea, coffee or pahar de jin! Your guide will take care of driving.
The final stop before returning to Chisinau is Curchi Monastery, one of Moldova’s most beautiful religious sites. Here, learn about the two legends associated with the monastery and admire its architectural grandeur.
After a day filled with history, culture, and breathtaking sights, the tour concludes with a return drive to Chisinau, where you will be dropped off at your hotel.
